Region 6 Marches Forward to Meet the Needs of All Students
By: Dr. Nancy Eastlake, Gifted Education Consultant
District Newsletter, Spring 2016
“A high quality educational program must address the needs of all students. Region 6 supports policy and practices that enhance the education of all students while responding to the unique needs of students with exceptional gifts and talents, equipping and empowering them to engage in intellectual inquiry and personal growth.”
RSD6 Gifted Steering Committee Mission Statement
This year, a steering committee consisting of teachers, administrators, and Board of Education members has been meeting to develop a proposal for meeting the needs of gifted children. Connecticut school districts are mandated to identify children “(1) possessing demonstrated or potential abilities that give evidence of very superior intellectual, creative or specific academic capability and (2) needing differentiated instruction or services beyond those being provided in the regular school program in order to realize their intellectual, creative or specific academic potential” (Conn General Statutes 10-76a(5)).
After many dedicated hours, the committee finalized plans to begin gifted education identification and services for students entering grades 5 to 8. Research shows that gifted students benefit from high-level learning opportunities that extend beyond the general curriculum. A gifted curriculum is currently being developed for the elementary and middle school levels. This curriculum will provide additional learning opportunities for gifted students that will complement the enrichment programs that are already in place at the elementary and middle school levels.
Superintendent Ed Drapp has appointed Dr. Angela Rossbach to direct program services, in conjunction with her role as principal of Warren School.
